Listed below are major geographical areas. Click on any to view the sites within the named region. Some of the major regions are further sub-divided into the major areas within those regions, such as the modern provinces of Crete and of Greece.
Almost all of the sites listed have particular relevance to the study of the Bronze Age, but many were populated or in use well before or significantly after the period. Some sites extend in both temporal directions. However, a small number are included because of their general interest to students of ancient history.
Colour satellite photography provides a perspective on a site impossible from the ground, and with a level of interactivity and a sense of ‘being there‘ impossible with a printed map. Few of us are able to visit more than a handful of these sites, let alone take to the air to view them in their entirety from above.
The list of sites covered is not comprehensive: some key sites are not visible in satellite photography due to overlaying agriculture or settlements, or because they were deliberately covered over to preserve them for future study. The list has been compiled as I have encountered references to them, with some additions for particularly well known sites. Ongoing study will see the addition of further sites.
For each site, co-ordinates are provided as latitude and longitude decimal values. You can copy these to your device’s clipboard from where they can be pasted into your own documents. You can also view each site using satellite photography, from a number of map providers, including Apple and Google. Try each of these: if one service has a poor or obscured view, the other may not:
